Show Gardens

alan capper relishes the huge challenge of staging show gardens in order to continually test himself at the highest level of design, and has had three medal winning gardens so far at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, arguably 'the world cup of garden design' (alan titchmarsh obe).

The design itself was for one of the ‘chic’ themed courtyard gardens which required a contemporary and boldly innovative approach to garden design. Frosted perspex screens formed the garden boundaries. Curving clear panels and an arched hedge acted as the backdrop to the central circular space of gravel and paving surrounding a small raised grass area. The space was further defined by a broad low clipped hedge with frosted glass specimen plant containers rising out of it to different heights. The focal point was a very simple stainless steel fountain set in front of the clear panels. Other features included orange pebble lights set in gravel, the use of french ‘boules’ to form the transition between the gravel and paving, mirrored spheres, a clear perspex curved bench and tubes full of marbles, glass nuggets and coloured sands.

The garden was implemented in partnership with local contractors Landscape Management Services.

“We were delighted to help this innovative design project which will thrust the region into the national spotlight at the Chelsea Flower Show, recognised as the premier event of its kind in the world.” Dr John Bridge, One NorthEast chairman

“We have many applications and it is quite a rigorous selection process as to who puts on a show garden, so to be chosen is quite an achievement.” A Royal Horticultural Society spokesperson
